Defense is the best career option in current scenario where gender difference doesn’t matter at all neither in training nor in performance. This was very common in all three crew members who was part of first women crew of coast guard patrolling aircraft. In a first of its kind operation, Eastern Coast Guard, Eastern Region, deployed all women officers in a fixed wing aircraft Dornier for maritime patrolling and to check illegal activities at sea, especially near international maritime boundary line. There many other sectors too for women but defence is the best option for many reasons. First and foremost, it gives you equal opportunities to expose your inner and physical strength. Women Cadets also have to go through the same training like men which mainly includes physical fitness. There are many other career options for females but this one is more adventures and challenging every day.

Deputy Commandant Sunita Venugopal

Speaking to team Infodea, Deputy Commandant Sunita Venugopal who was the pilot of women crew says, “There were no different feeling or experience while going for air patrolling with all women crew. We have been trained in such a way where gender difference doesn’t matter at all. Most important part is the arms and equipment you deal with and your performance while using it is not based on who handles it. We have done the same exercise and task which men go through to reach every level. There is no difference while assigning the task to a lady officer. From the first day of our training till the end of the job tenure, we are being treated equally, which is the best part of defence”. Native of Kochi, Kerla Sunita comes from a family of defence personnel who inspired her to opt for armed forces. Her grandfather was an Army officer and was conferred with The Veer Chakra award. Her father also served in infantry department. Sunita is married and a mother of 2.5 year old kid.

In sea most of the illegal activities are in the form of shipping or fishing and our Coast guard not only protects but also assists ship and fishermen to prevent our country’s shores being misused for illegal activities like drug smuggling, human trafficking and many more. “Our job is to monitor these and take action when required”, says Deputy Commandant Akshi Karnal, native of Haryana. Serving in coast guard is an honour for her and if anyone is determined for anything particular nothing can stop him/her to achieve it. “My goal is to fly high and make service proud. Patrolling in open sky with only women crew was a really amazing experience. Women should come ahead in life with no fear and get success on her own capability. Women has to be the change to bring about change in the country”.
