In a recent lecture-cum-interactive session at Women’s Christian College, Chennai, Dr. Spurgeon, a counselor and professor of Madras Christian College discussed concepts associated to human relation.

In his lecture, he gave examples which were practical and relatable to one’s life. The following were his principles of concern:

UNDERSTANDING HUMAN RELATION

Human relations are of different types, that is, of blood, official, casual and social. Out of which blood relations tend to be permanent. It is way beyond than animal relations. It is a life time commitment towards the other person. Building relationships might seem to be a simple task, but building a healthy one is what requires understanding and trust.

ACCEPTANCE OF OTHERS

In order to maintain a smooth and healthy relationship, it’s very important to accept others the way they are and not in the way you want them to be. A 100% acceptance and respect is what a relationship demands. In a relationship, a person must feel free to express his feelings and speak his heart out.

LOVE AND LIKE. ARE THEY SAME?

Nowadays, the concept of ‘Like’ and ‘Love’ are likely to be misunderstood. Though these words sound similar, they actually carry a lot of difference in them. ‘Love’ is permanent whereas ‘Like’ is temporary. They change with time. All that you like can’t be loved. So what is that thing about ‘Love’ which can change your ‘Like’? A person, who hated cricket once, later started liking it because his son played cricket for the Indian team. The intense love for his son made him like his most hated sport.

COMMUNICATION: A SKILL TO LEARN

Communication is a simple term, yet the most complicated skill to be earned. It not only involves language but lots more than that. Language merely is a part of communication. The background of a person must be known in order to understand his speaking. Even a well-educated man failed to understand the term ‘Uddan Petti’ (unreserved bogi) spoken by an illiterate man just because he did not know the man’s socioeconomic background. Also, words once spoken cannot be taken back. Any close relationship can break due to improper communication.

BE WISE IN CHOOSING A LIFE PARTNER

If it takes two days to choose a perfect dress for a birthday party, how can you choose your life partner in one moment? Yes, it’s not uncommon to hear that, “Love at first sight and we decided to become a life partner.” Choosing your life partner must involve completely understanding each other and gaining mutual trust. It’s not necessary that a person having similar taste as yours will match you better. Way more differences in you and your partner and still attached to each other is what true love is and a sign of a healthy relationship. As it’s rightly said, ‘similar poles repel, opposite poles attract’.
