There is a need to focus on quality medical care, said Dr. T.S. Ravikumar, president, AIIMS (Mangalagiri). He was speaking during the special convocation of SRM Institute of Science and  Technology (SRMIST) held on its premises on Saturday.

Addressing the graduands he said many deaths are due to lack of proper medical care. Laxity in adhering to quality, established rules kills more people than lack of access to medical care.

Over 5884 graduates received their degrees during the convocation. Quality and patient safety must go together, he said. Various sources point that unsafe care is one of the top ten causes of death of patients, Dr. Ravikumar. About one in every ten patients comes in harms way, half of these situations are preventable.

There should be a change in system, efforts to remove errors in providing medical care must be ensured. Man-to-man, machine-to-man and machine-to-machine interfaces must work for patient safety, said senior healthcare professional.

The doctor to patient ratio is also is in tandem with the guidelines of World Health Organisation. Graduands have the special privelege of studying in an institution not all can replicate, your massive transformative purpose should be to work for developing inter-disciplinary programmes. One of the area to be addressed is universal healthcare, he said. Professor D. Acharya, former director, IIT-Kharagpur said technology is key for future, changes taking place at a fast pace in it will determine lot of things.

Emergence of new technologies like nano-technology will bring change in every aspect of life. Right from computing to drug design will witness lot of variations. You should adopt to these changes quickly, students should be capable of learning new developments and unlearning the old lessons constantly, said Acharya.

While you embrace changes, be prepared to lead yourself. ‘Be your own light.’ Vice chancellor of SRMIST Sandeep Sancheti delivering the annual report said the educational institution has lot of achievements to its credit. SRMIST won ‘University of the Year 2019. The organisation won third position in India in ARIIA rankings. More than 500 companies have offered placements to more than 7,000 students, he reminded.
