by INN(Infodea News Network),
In an effort to identify and encourage the scientific aptitude in students pursuing career in research the Department of Science and Technology under the Government of India is offering fellowship and contingency grants through a scholarship programme called the Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) started in 1999.

The students studying in Class 11 to first year of any UG programme in basic sciences are selected based on performance in aptitude test and interview. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY fellows are organised in prestigious research and educational institutions in India.

The fellowship and contingency grant are offered to the selected KVPY fellows from first year of graduation up to pre-PhD level or five years whichever is earlier. The monthly stipend of INR 5,000 and annual contingency grant of INR 20,000 are granted during first to three year after which it increases to monthly stipend of INR 7,000 and annual contingency grant of INR 28,000 for next two years.

Selection procedure

Based on the performance in aptitude test, short-listed students are called for interview.

Further, the merit list is prepared on 75 per cent weight-age for aptitude test marks and 25 per cent weight-age for the interview.

Eligibility

The fellowship of the students appearing for KVPY will be activated only if they join an undergraduate course in Basic Sciences, that is, BSc/ BS/ BStat/ BMath/ Int MSc/ MS in Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Statistics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Ecology, Molecular Biology, Botany, Zoology, Physiology, Biotechnology, Neurosciences, Bioinformatics, Marine Biology, Geology, Human Biology, Genetics, Biomedical Sciences, Applied Physics, Geophysics, Materials Science or Environmental Science.

Aptitude exam levels

The aptitude exam can be given at three levels:

Stream SA: Students studying in Class 11 can appear for SA provided they must score a minimum of 80 per cent marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in Class 10.

Stream SX: Students studying in Class 12 can appear for SX provided they have scored a minimum of 80 per cent marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in Class 10 and must score a minimum of 60 per cent marks in aggregate in Science subjects (Physics/ Chemistry/ Biology) in Class 12..

Stream SB: Students studying in first year of undergraduate programme can appear for SB provided they have scored a minimum of 80 per cent marks in aggregate in Mathematics and Science subjects in Class 10. A minimum of 60 per cent marks in aggregate in Science subjects (Physics/ Chemistry/ Biology) in Class 12 and must score a minimum of 60 per cent marks in first year final examination.

Exam Pattern

KVPY is a multiple choice questions based exam of total 100 marks. It constitutes of two parts— Part 1 and Part 2, each containing 4 sections — Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology. Paper 1 contains 20 questions whereas Paper 2 contains 10 questions in each section. In the Stream-SA, all questions are compulsory (Science and Mathematics). In respect of the Streams SB and SX, there will be four sections in Part 1 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics) and four sections in Part 2 (Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics). The candidates are allowed to answer any three of the four subjects in Part 1 and any two of the four subjects in Part 2.

Important Dates

The last date for the submission of online application is August 23 and the exam is scheduled to be held on November 5, 2017. For further details, visit kypy.iisc.ernet.in.
