The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) announced on Sunday that the metro services will remain to be closed till May 31, considering the extension of the lockdown though the country has started to move with a new set of guidelines, the metro lines such as the Delhi Metro, Chennai Metro, Bangalore Metro, etc have not been allowed to resume its services. The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) announced on Sunday, that the ongoing national lockdown will be extended till May 31. These measures were taken to contain the current health crisis in our country.

“In light of the extension of lockdown issued by the government, metro services will remain closed for commuters till 31st May. Our helpline services 155370 shall also not be available. You may reach us at [email protected],” tweeted the DMRC. Although the metro line has been halted, all other transport means will be allowed to operate under restrictions within the state of Delhi.

Reports suggest that DMRC is securing the maintenance work of its network by running the trains empty. According to Financial Express, this is being done to test the signaling systems, the rolling stock and to also make sure that the trains are ready to resume its services when allowed. It also stated that the Delhi Metro stations have started marking out passenger spaces by drawing lines on the floor in order to maintain distance between each passenger.

While metro rail services continue to remain shut, the state governments have control over their intra-state movements. Public and private transports are advised to be sanitized in regular intervals and are ordered to follow the issued regulations. Also, separate teams of police officials will be appointed to supervise these vehicles. All domestic and international flight services continue to remain closed except for special cases permitted by the Government.

Reports also suggest that the Central Government may make it mandatory for metro commuters to have the Aarogya Setu app on their phones.
