Cauvery Hostel at IIT-M to undergo renovation

The maintenance activities on Indian Institute of Technology, Madras (IIT-M) premises will witness an augmentation, thanks to generous help that has poured in from its alumnus.

Former student of the prestigious educational institution donated Rs 5 crore which will be used to augment maintenance and also renovate Cauvery Hostel on its premises. The hostel is said to be the first one constructed on the institution’s premises and it will be renovated to take it to world-class standards for the benefit of students. The hostels on IIT-Madras premises are named after rivers, construction of Cauvery Hostel began in 1961.

The capacity of the hostel was for accomodating 216 students in single occupancy. The hostel was expanded in 2002 to accommodate another 171 students. Since 2018, the rooms have been converted as double occupancy rooms to accommodate around 750 students.

Indian Institute of Technology Madras alumnus Dr. Krishna Chivukula, who also is the owner and chairman, Board of Directors, INDO US MIM TEC Private Ltd, is donating a Rs.5 crore to renovate the Campus hostels and augment existing maintenance facilities.

An amount of Rs 2.5 crore has already been handed over to renovate Cauvery Hostel. Two more hostels are said to have been identified for renovation.

Krishna gave away the cheque to Professor Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director, IIT Madras in the presence of Prof. Mahesh Panchagnula, Dean (International and Alumni Relations), IIT Madras on 8 January this year.

The contribution made is said to be the part of ‘KeepItFlowing’ campaign which is aimed at supporting the hostels, using this amount facelift works in restrooms like waterproofing, facade improvements in corridor and staircases will be taken up.

The other renovation works to be taken up are painting, shoe rack fixing, gardening, development of playfields, cycle parking area and facade improvement at the main entrance of the institute.

Krishna said IIT-Madras was the reason behind his progress in life. The quality education he received from the organisation had aided his growth in life. ‘The education I got here ledto my admission in Harvard Business School, which in turn got me success.’ 

‘I am delighted to be able to give back to the institution that was the root cause of my success. I sincerely urge my fellow IITians to experience the same joy that I experience,’ he said.
