Awareness of the environment and its protection is the basic duty of every individual. And with the day to day increase of environmental issues and its hazardous effect it has become the most concerning the topic in today’s scenario. To further discuss on this critical topic, students of ASCO (Amity School of Communication) interviewed Dr. Swapnil Rai, assistant professor at Amity University MP, on various topics concerning environmental issues, its protection, how an individual can contribute to its protection and also environmental studies as a subject as well as a career option.

Dr. Swapnil Rai has specialized in the area of environmental pollution and ecology & ecosystem and has also published various books on different environmental concerning topics. He believed that the threat to the environment is the current most important area to look upon and despite all the other things, environmental awareness and participation for the change is the key to a healthy surrounding. When asked about why he chose environmental studies as his profession he answered that he wanted to do something for the environment, and informing people about the environment and encouraging them to participate through education could be considered as his contribution.

He believes that government is only the one to make rules and raise funds but the ultimate role is of the society and every individual prevailing in that society. The lack of awareness among the people and the lack of willingness to contribute is the root cause. To protect the environment one should start from a basic level, one should be cautious about his day to day activities. Small changes such as garbage segregation, vehicle pooling and etc. can lead to a great impact. During the interview, the concept of sustainable development was also discussed and was considered as the key to not only a healthier today but also a better future.

Being a professor at Amity University he believed that environmental studies as a compulsory subject in the UG courses are an effective way to aware and encourage students to contribute in the environmental protection and also opens the gate to a great profession and field. Since it is not only a topic to be concern about but also has a great career perspective as in today’s era environment specialist is the need every industry.
