Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, right in the heart of India.  It is known as the City of Lakes for its various natural and artificial lakes and for being one of the greenest cities in India. It is the 16th largest city in India.  Marathi, English, Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati, Sindhi are some of the languages fluently spoken in Bhopal.

STORY BEHIND CITY OF LAKES

Bhopal is also referred to as the City Of Lakes because of its two breathtaking lakes situated right at the centre of the city. Apart from this, Bhopal is also home to some historically beautiful and rustic mosques, bustling bazaars, serpentine alleys and exquisite havelis.

  1. Upper lake- The capital city of Madhya Pradesh holds a significant number of lakes hence widely known as Bhopal the city of lakes. Upper Lake is the most significant lake of Bhopal commonly known as the Bhojtal. It’s the oldest human-made lake in the country that lies on the west of Bhopal. The locals also call it Bada Talab. Serving around 30 million gallons of water the lake is a primary source of potable water to the residents of the city.

  1. Lower lake- Situated in the peaceful and serene surroundings of majestic hills, the Lower Lake is a beautiful remnant of the great Mugal Empire. Locally known as Chota Talaab, it is separated from the Upper Lake by an over-bridge. The aesthetic appeal of the lake is enhanced by the the magnificent Kamala garden. Lower Lake, along with the Upper Lake, gives this city the title of ‘City of Lakes’.

 

  1. Van Vihar- Van Vihar is a National Park and a Zoological Space that operates under the guidelines of the Central Zoo Authority. It is located just adjacent to the Upper Lake in Bhopal, near Shymala Hills. The animals here are kept closest to their natural habitats, making it a heaven for people who love nature.

  1. Gohar Mahal :-Gohar mahal- the name is based on the daughter of Shah Jahan or Mumtaz- Gohar Begum. She was the first women emperor of Bhopal and the mahal was built by her in 1820. It is one of the most beautiful structures in Bhopal and all the history lovers should definitely visit it.

  1. Jama Masjid :-Constructed during the period of Quidisiya Begum, Jama Masjid boasts of classic Islamic Architecture in its beautiful shrine and two tall minarets.

  1. Moti Masjid :-Moti Masjid was constructed in the year 1860 by a progressive leader Sikander Begum. The mosque is relatively smaller in size, but its architectural marvel and religious significance attracts tourists and devotees from different parts of the country.

 

  1. Archeologica Museum :-The archeological museum exhibits sculptures of artists from all over Madhya Pradesh and provides a deep insight into the rich culture of this state. It houses statues of Lakshmi, Buddha, and images of Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva among other pieces of art. The museum is one of the best tourist places in Bhopal.
